Got a new cage the other day. It's large enough for two or for one, a
bit cramped split in two as I have it right now (took apart the C&C
cages and zip-tied a couple of the grids in the middle), but livable
for the next six weeks or so (planning to get Napoleon neutered at the
beginning of January).

So I come home tonight to find Napoleon on the wrong side of the cage,
mighty pleased with himself.

Brilliant me put his hay rack too close to the divider, and he managed
to squeeze through the top even though the cage lid was closed.

Katty has been violated, of course. Her nether regions were wet (yes,
I checked).

So, how likely is it that my 3yo never-been-bred female piglet is now
with child, how likely is it that she will carry to term, and how
likely is it that she will survive giving birth?

*sigh*

I've been so careful, I've had Nappy for almost three years, and he's
never got in.

All it takes is once - let that be a lesson to all you newbies out
there!

Yeah, I know all that about the birth etc. - that's why I have been
sooooo careful to keep them separate. I'm really hoping she's not
pregnant!

I was already planning to have Napoleon neutered next month; now it's
definitely a necessity! :P

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but for a 3yo never-been-bred before pig
to give birth can be fatal for the pig concerned. I'm not trying to alarm
you but even if she can carry to term she may not survive the birth as after
around 10 months an unbred females pelvic bones fuse with makes giving birth
after this time very, very difficult, if not impossible - unless you are
prepared for a pig competent vet to perform a caesarean, which again carries
difficulties. Please see the link http://www.guinealynx.com/breeding.html

On the otherhand, hopefully, fingers and everything else crossed, she won't
be pregnant

Yup.

Does anyone know if females can get pregnant if they aren't in heat?
I don't think she was/is.

We've rigged up the cage so nobody can get where they shouldn't be at
all, so all should be good from now on. *sigh*

I'll be making them their (much needed) vet appointments right after
Christmas.

Sorry, but I have to disagree on the "fusing" part. It's a very common
misunderstanding, but the pelvic bones NEVER FUSE. The "only thing" that
happens, is that the pelvic becomes a lot less flexible. Of course, this
also means that giving birth is so much harder for a never bred 3 y.o.
piggie than it is for a never bred 7 months old piggie.

All we can hope for, is that she didn't get preggers.

As fas as I know, piggies CAN get pregnant if they aren't in heat. But
normally the female won't let the male "do his job" (if you get my drift),
when he shows too much interest, when she isn't in heat. He can sniff her,
clean her ears, clean her eyes, be gentle for her, and she will enjoy all
this attention. But as soon as he wants to mount her, she will let him know
that she has no interest. She may nip at him, just to make sure that her
message is clear.

Some piggies don't really show, when they are in heat. But the male will
smell if/that she is. I have 4 piggies, 3 girls and a neutered male Rambo
(and boy do I need him to keep some order in the henhouse ;)).

One of the girls, Mysti, simply never shows that she's in heat. Only because
Rambo sometimes shows some more interest in her than he usually does, I know
that she is in heat. The other 2 girls on the other hand, show that they are
in heat very much. Poor Rambo gets seduced, chased and mounted by them
during "those days". They wiggle their butts before his nose and make him
grazy. And the saddest thing is, that these girls are NOT in heat on the
same time. So when the hormones from female number 1 are back to normal,
female number 2 starts seducing/chasing/mounting Rambo. Oh yeah, he really
has a tough life. LOL

When you take your piggies to the vet, I'm not sure if they already can
determine if your female is pregnant or not. But maybe you can discuss the
options with your vet in case she DID get pregnant.

Keeping my fingers crossed for her.

Well, we just went to the vet. Here is the info, as far as that goes.

Katonia
* Is likely pregnant; she felt fuller than she should.
* Has a slight heart murmur on the right.

Napoleon
* Has a sebaceous cyst, but that won't impact neutering, so we're good
to go.
* Needs more vitamin C because his teeth are starting to do weird
things.

So we're due back at the vet's on January 30 for a pregnancy check and
pre-neuter bloodwork. I'll pick up the Oxbow vitamin C tablets while
I'm at it.
