Would arnica or emu oil work for guinea pigs without causing harm?

Not a clue, but I've also got a suggestion: Spirea Salycifolia.
It is something based on a plant (Spirea), and 100% natural. We used it
as an alternative to normal pain medication, and it worked great: one
happy painfree pig! Reason for us to use it was that the normal pain
medication could cause kidney-problems. Our pig already had weak
kidneys, so normal medication would be a risk.

We got it through the shelter were we also got several of our piggies...

Do you mean for pain relief? If so,
I have used 0.3mls (cm3) every 4 hours Calpol which is a paediatric
trade name drug in the UK containing paracetamol. It is given by
syringe and pigs like it as it tastes sweet. We use it on teething
babies and it is safe for piggies to relieve pain (Cambridge cavy
trust use it in their piggie hospital in UK). Any pig who is in renal
(kidney) failure would have to be prescribed pain relief by a vet.

I see Michel is talking about Spirea Salicyfolia. Aspirin is a
salicylate - is this plant the source of aspirin that we use as an
anti-inflammatory pain reliever? Does anyone know the answer to that?

It's my understanding that the willow tree is the source for aspirin.

Thanks Cindy I didn't know that (re willow). I think Kelvyn is right
that Aspirin wouldn't normally be used in pigs. They do however have
Rimadyl which is a related non steroidal anti-inflammatory for pain
relief in inflammatory conditions like 'bumble foot' etc... Peter
Gurney's book 'Piggie potions' is a good source of information on
natural remedies for piggies.

Hi Michel - nothing to do with piggies..... but I had to tell you....
I went to Holland for the first time in 50 years (Amsterdam) and was
really impressed with your country. It was SO clean compared to London
and the people were So friendly and keen to practise their English in
Bars and cafes. Had a really lovely time at the Bilderberg Garden
Hotel. Can't wait to get back there...........

That "spirea" stuff I mentioned is defenitely no aspirine. It is simply
the name of a plant, and I suppose the medicine is derived from that
plant...

"thee-boompje", which means "Tea-tree". Don't know if it's useable for

Don't ask me how it works, I haven't got a clue. It is simply a medicine
I got from the piggy-shelter.

I hardly ever go there. I live in village aprox. 200 km south of
Amsterdam, near (on) the Belgian Border. But I'm glad you liked it!

We finally broke down and took Fuzz to the vet. She had xrays, and did not
have a broken leg afterall. I don't know if she had a pulled muscle or
tissue damage, but we got her some painkillers, and she seems to be resting
comfortably finally. Fortunately we found a vet who doesn't put the guinea
pig under for xrays, so we're pretty satisfied. We got a perfectly good xray
with minimal harm to Fuzz.
Thanks to all who responded.

Fat guinea pigs - I have two guinea pigs. I feed them once in the morning (pellets, alfa treats and timothy hay). And once at night (pellets, veggies and more hay). They're getting fat. Am I not supposed to be feeding them so much? Every time I feed them the alfa..

My dog ate my guinea-pigs - This was bad.Nobody at home, somehow the cage was open , the dog (a huge Doberman) got them and ate both. s**t. Should I punish my dog?

how many guinea-pigs are too many - I had a friend who had 3 guinea-pigs in a 2x4 foot cage. The female got pregnant and had several babies. They gave all the babies away except 2. That left them with a total of 5 guinea-pigs. They tried to keep up with changeing the bedding and such..

I eat guinea pigs - sell me some? doS

Guinea Pigs and TV - I've never met a guinea pig so fascinated by TV as Bracken. When sitting on the couch, no matter which way we place her down, she will turn to face the TV. When in her cage, she has taken to lying half in, half out of her pigloo, again facing the TV..
